What is it and why?

Glastonbury is a little town in the West of England- and the Tor is this anomalous, conical hill sticking out of the middle of the plain. In the Middle Ages Glastonbury abbey was one of the richest and most powerful in England.

Those are the facts. Now for the legends.

Glastonbury was founded by Joseph of Arimathea who came to England after the resurrection carrying the Holy Grail.

The Holy Grail is buried under the Tor.

Glastonbury is King Arthur's Isle of Avalon

King Arthur is buried in the Abbey.

And that's just for starters.

Glastonbury today is a town like no other- a pilgrimage site for mystics, magicians, hippies and New Agers of every stripe. It is also the venue for a famous yearly music festival.

So, is that tower thingie a remnant of the abbey, or was it built as a free-standing structure? What's in it? Bells?

Your blog is always so educational!

The tower is all that's left of the late medieval church of St Michael's. It belonged to the abbey- and fell into disuse after Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. There are no bells- alas; It's just a hollow shell.

Lovely photos, especially the third one down. I just love that sky and the shadows on the grass!

You were lucky to be able to catch a fine spell. I've never been to Glastonbury and I was thinking of going there this summer anyway, but these pictures have definitely made me want to see the Tor and surroundings.

Thank you.

We were incredibly lucky. The fine spell lasted two, three hours and that was that.

You must visit Glastonbury. The town is a funny little place but the Tor never disappoints.

What wonderful light. I particularly like the one of the tower netted in trees.

It was quite early in the morning. And the only time on our holiday that the sun showed her face.

Thank you!!!! I love your photos, because while you're looking at the Christian, you also manage to get the pagan, atavistic view.

Glastonbury is a place where Christian and Pagan are inextricably interwoven.

Maybe--but I don't think everyone sees that. It's just very, very clear in your photos, and I appreciate that.

I've been both now- Christian and Pagan- and I see them as complimentary. They're different languages but they're talking about the same thing.

I realise not everybody agrees. :)

Yes, yes it is. These photos make me wish I was back there now. I clearly remember my short time in the town, and my walk up the hill. It was a misty day - not raining hard, but lots of moisture in the air.

I seem to return there roughly once a decade. It's not often enough. I think of Glastonbury as my spiritual home.

*sigh* I really, really need to get back to the UK soon. I remember my walk up the Tor - with the sheep!!

The sheep weren't around on this occasion. Maybe it's too early in the year for them.

These are so beautiful. I particularly love #2.

I've stood in all the places you stood to take those pictures. Looking at these, I can remember so clearly what Glastonbury was like, and the odd humming stillness of the Tor. Thank you; I needed those memories this morning.

*wants to go back*

Thanks. #2 was one of those lucky hits.

I want to go back there too.

Dion Fortune spoke about the air on the Tor being full of sparkles. I know just what she meant.

I want to walk up that hill! And feel the "vibes" of the pagan/Christian link that are housed on Glastonbury Tor. Oh, yes!

When I was 19 I spent the night on the Tor with a whole bunch of hippies. Happy times.

I keep having to go back.
