I wanted to know the secret so I became a priest. I found out that the secret was a casket full of air. Perfumed air. So I became another sort of a priest. Always a priest. Always surrounded by an aura of benevolence and wisdom- hiding in the cloud.

Wisdom was my junk food, was my junk. I dispensed it with gracious hands. "Here, my dear, have some junk. The secret is there is no secret." "Thank you, your endearing holiness."

Carnival time.

Working as that other sort of priest, I prayed for Understanding. Yes, I knew what I was doing; I was praying to Binah, the Great Cunt in the Sky, Mrs Womb-Tomb-Doom, Creator and Destroyer. Undo me if you must but just let me KNOW.

And then, rattle-bang-flop- out the funhouse door. No more distorting mirrors, no more scary clowns, no more dancing skellibobs.

Oh look. Just look at the....

Thank you so much for this gorgeously written post. I couldn't think of a better introduction to read from a newcomer to my friends-list. This is wonderful.

Cardinal Newman, Cardinal Newman, do tell!

Um, what do want to know exactly?

I've always liked that title.

When I was at theological college we were encouraged to admire Newman inordinately. I remember studying some controversy he had with Charles Kingsley- something about the the wonderfulness of the Pope I should think. The party line was to swoon over the beauty of Newman's prose and the subtlety of his reasoning and to sneer at Kingsley as a mutton-chop-be-whiskered philistine. I'm afraid I never had the courage- in that super-heated atmosphere- to point out that Kingsley was, in fact, right.

Oh, it was simply a little joke expressing that I never fully understood the overall painted by Newman--suppose it was too subtle? ;)

Sorry. I'm just dense.

No I never understood it either.

There was a nice bit about some wisteria- or some other stuff that was growing up the side of a college- I understood that- but the rest went clean over my head.

I'm unsubtle. I'm a philistine. I'm Charles Kingsley's bitch.

Spank that bitch, Daddy!

(You're a philistine and I'm unclean, quite the libertine.)

Oh my! Are you online? Let's chat!

I don't understand this. Here it says you've just commented and back at the page it says you commented six hours ago. The LJ clocks are weird. So I thought I'd missed you but maybe I haven't.

Anyway I'm here now... :)

We should figure out this time conversion. Let me see, I think you are ten hours behind. So now that it is 3:58 PM, it would be 5:58 AM--yes?

From: [identity profile] besideserato.livejournal.com
Oh! Look, at "time posted" on that note! I was off by a minute! So. Ten hours, it is!

There was a popular song in the '30s with a chorus that went something like "If it's night-time in Italy, it's Tuesday over here." That pretty well reflects my level of confusion. So your evening is my morning. I'll try to keep that in mind.
Sight!

Let me confuse you. When I was in Hawaii, there was a twelve hour difference to Sweden. Since Hawaii is twenty hours behind Saipan, of four hours ahead of the day before, then that means...

All right, I will stop. I am starting to really confuse myself.

"Sight"? I meant "sigh". A slip of the typing finger.

One of the things you should know about me is that I'm number-blind. Anything with numbers in it causes me to panic and bolt.

Sweden. I'm curious (yellow). How does Sweden fit into the pattern of your wanderings? I have difficulty imagining you in the icy north. St Petersburg, maybe (under the tsars.) Oslo, no.

Oslo? Dammit, I mean Stockholm!

From: [identity profile] besideserato.livejournal.com
[Laughs] Another slip of the typing finger. It must be all these numbers we are talking, they just muddle everything. Stockholm was a year ago. I told someone I would follow him to the end of the earth. And he showed me that the end of the earth was the Venice of the North.

Was it magical? Yes. Magical and wondrous and beautiful and perfect and one of the greatest trips I have made. Was it worth it? Of course! Was I successful in my attempt to make an ice prince see that he could learn to love a woman of equatorial temperament? Of course not.

But heartbreak is where literature starts. Right there on the airplane, sailing through Monet skies and listening to Madame Butterfly, sobbing in my crackers, missing everything.

He is the Magnus I speak about in my entries. I will always say Sweden is the home of good things--Bond girls and Absolut. But there are things about it we could certainly do without, stone cold inflexibility and, of course, Abba. ;)

"Sweden is the home of good things"-

Don't forget Ingmar Bergman. I moderate the Ingmar Bergman Community. At the last count I think we had- ooh- four members. Or was it three?

I go and post there when- like Garbo- I vant to be alone.

Oh yes- Garbo- another good Swedish thing, and then there's the other I. Bergman and Bibi Anderson and Liv Ullman.....

Oh my god, I was going to say something about Ingmar Bergman and Greta Garbo, but I spaced it. You are absolutely right. There is a community here on LJ about it? How interesting! You must direct me to it so I may see the kind of mischief you are up to.

From: [identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com
I don't know how to put links in comments (I'm sure it's simple but I just haven't figured it out) but if you go to my info page and look under communities and click on ingmar bergman you'll be transported there- as if by magic carpet. We could do with more members. Right now it's just me talking to myself.

Oh, here, let me offer you something good in return:

To put links, you write <*A href="address"*> but without the little *s. If it's something within LJ, like a user or community, you can write <*lj user="name"*>, again without the little *s.

Try it out and see the magic! Also, thanks for the heads up, I will check it out.

That was amazing, you're so thoroughly like my friend Michael that I'm not sure you're not his twin. he had a journal too [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] It's my destiny to find one of you. But the question is, what do I do once I find one?

Of course I've just been to look at Nasrudin's LJ. What a pity he stopped posting. I particularly like something he had to say about the nature of words. I wanted to leave comments, but I guess there's no point.
