Catching Up

That's the first family Christmas I've enjoyed in ever so long. We got together at Jenny and Ian's house in Aylesford- and my mother was there and my nephew was there. We had turkey, pudding, crackers and paper hats- then moved in the living room to watch the Queen's Christmas message. 

On Boxing Day we drove to Allington Lock- just outside Maidstone- looked at the river and had lunch.

It took us nine hours to get home yesterday- exactly twice as long as it took us to drive down- I don't know why but we were in queues most of the way. The news of the Bhutto assassination came through while we were on the road- the story getting darker with each report; first there'd been an explosion, then she'd been slightly hurt, then she'd been badly hurt, then she was dead.

John Simpson was saying he didn't think there was anything anyone could do about Islamic extremism except wait for the storm to blow itself out. 

Ailz's mum and dad gave us tea when we got back. Ailz's mum had made this really nice turkey, cheese and leek pie and there was trifle for afters.

My folks came up from Kent to Shropshire yesterday, and it took them twice as long too. I think there were just an awful lot of folks on the road.

I suppose that must have been it. We saw a few breakdowns- but nothing that was likely to have caused the kind of delays we were experiencing.

Except for the travel back it sounds like a good and peaceful family time.

The journey home wasn't really so dreadful. Time spent on the motorway is "empty" time and doesn't weigh very much. It certainly didn't seem like nine hours.
