Llandudno III

My favourite shot from yesterday. Llandudno is delightfully traditional. Not only donkey rides but also a Punch and Judy man.

I like this one too.

And, finally- the Cheshire cat.  Alice Liddel (the original Alice in Wonderland) used to holiday in Llandudno and the Happy Valley gardens on the Great Orme are scattered with these delightful wood carvings of Wonderland characters.

Those are nice! The pebbles were very evocative for me.

That kid raised his arm at just the right moment. It's one of those happy accidents.

All these pictures are marvelous! It's so unlike what I, as a Mid-Atlantic North American, think of as the beach or the seaside; we don't get cliffs and mountains and trees, or if we once did, they've been leveled a hundred years ago. I just came back from Atlantic City, and they've built up dunes the whole length of the boardwalk and planted grasses on them to prevent the little bit of beach that remains from just washing away.

We do have resorts like Atlantic City- in fact most of the really big ones- like Brighton and Blackpool- have straight waterfronts and not very wonderful beaches.

Wonderful!
I particularly LOVE the cat. I had to get over thinking about the fact that it looks like it got shot though. When you said it was wood I realized the situation.

One or two of the others have been vandalised I'm afraid...

[identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt that that one was vandalised. It looks like there was a knot in the wood and over time as the wood dried it cracked out from the knot. I think?

Yes, that's what I think too. I like the way it looks.

Despite the obvious climatic and geographic differences, the donkey photo reminds me vaguely of Mijas on the Costa del Sol in Spain. They do the donkey ride thing up big there and pebbly beaches are the norm.

The ill placed knot hole and age cracks radiating from it on the Cheshire cat really do look like a bullet wound.Did you get more pictures of the Wonderland wood carvings? I really like the cat.

I love the pebbles and the seaweed. There are beaches like that in Maine.

There are so many different colours and textures...

My icon is the Liddell holiday house

That's splendid. Where is it located in relation to everything else?

[identity profile] richenda.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
At the far end of the Great Orme from the pier - it's called the West End - facing across the sea to Puffin Island and Anglesey. On a clear day it has a view of Beaumaris Castle.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, so I didn't get anywhere near it.

Maybe next time......

[identity profile] richenda.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't do everything!

From the pier you go along the long straight road (Gloddaseth Road becoming Gloddaeth Avenue) that runs parallel with the Orme. There are large car parks on both sides of that road, about half way along it, and from those it's about five minutes' walk, perhaps less for a brisk walker. There is also a car park at the West End - but they all get pretty full on a fine day.
When you get to the end, turn right for the Liddell house, left for a good meal at the Sandringham Hotel.

Thanks for the directions.

I love the Alice books.
