The morning of the day we went to Versailles we spent in Monet's garden at Giverny. I'm not wildly keen on Monet and the Impressionists but this is a special place- and something important to humanity- a new way of seeing- was nurtured here. Van Gogh said it best. "Monet is just an eye- but, my God, what an eye!" Monet was a humble person and impossible not to like- and his house is an unremakable, countrified family home (he and his second wife had loads of kids between them) with a large but unshowy garden in the backyard. Walking round the famous lily pond I felt- in spite of all the people I was following and who were treading on my heels- that I was on holy ground.
Giverny is a tiny village. The church is Romanesque. In the cemetery is the honoured grave of six English airmen who died when their Lancaster bomber crashed in flames in a nearby field.
