Sorry--I found out *at* lunch. Several people at the table knew this. (So it must be true? I haven't looked further for substantiation yet.)

I expect it's true. Napoleon took scholars and archaeologists to Egypt, but I don't suppose his soldiers shared in his enthusiasm for ancient civilisation.

How odd- as I write this they are showing pictures of the sphinx on T.V.!
