And Then There's The Fountain...

Thank you for posting these wonderful pictures of the fountain and the garden. They're so realistic, it's almost like being there myself!

I hadn't been to Hever since I was a kid- and I'd forgotten what an amazing place it is.

Wonderful pictures. You've captured the light and the charm of the place. It was a glorious day while we were in the gardens. Who would have thought it could have been such a downpour at the start of our visit?

Thanks.

We did well for weather, didn't we? I love to photograph those stormy-cloudy skies.

Incidentally there are more pictures of Hever in my LJ "Scrapbook".

Lovely fountain--so realistic.

It's based on- or inspired by- the Trevi fountain in Rome.

Ah. The style is so similar, but the mood is different. I like this one better, I think. More restful.

Thanks for pointing out the similarity to me; I wouldn't have known if you hadn't said.

I just found out lunch that the reason the Sphinx has no nose is Napoleon's target practice. I was absolutely shocked. What a moron.

"I just found out lunch that the reason the Sphinx has no nose is Napoleon's target practice."

Oh dear- that's terrible!

[identity profile] karenkay.livejournal.com 2007-06-18 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry--I found out *at* lunch. Several people at the table knew this. (So it must be true? I haven't looked further for substantiation yet.)

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2007-06-18 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I expect it's true. Napoleon took scholars and archaeologists to Egypt, but I don't suppose his soldiers shared in his enthusiasm for ancient civilisation.

How odd- as I write this they are showing pictures of the sphinx on T.V.!

I love synchronicity!

I see shades of the Trevi Fountain there. Marble is an amazing material for sculpting, isn“t it? The fluidity of the body of the nude woman to the right in the second picture is wonderful. This is lovely. Thank you!

I remember buying a postcard of the fountain when I was a child. I'm very fond of it.

I must have driven by the M25 turn off for Hever Castle a thousand times. Thanks for giving me a reason to finally take the turning, these are lovely.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2007-06-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's splendid.

They charge a substantial entrance fee, but it's worth it. You could spend the whole day there and still not have seen everything.

GORGEOUS shots!

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks

Wow. Great photos, all of them. Thanks!

Every once in a while one comes across a great subject....

[identity profile] senordildo.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Those last two shots are sort of scary in a "I'm coming to get YOUUUU!" sort of way.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Especially the last one.

Thank you. How fun to see the woman climbing out of the water.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2007-06-27 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She's lovely, isn't she? Maybe slightly unnerving too.
