Our life was structured round Joe's comings and goings. Now that he's no longer coming and going we have to find a new framework. Ah well, as my father used to say- "Change is good for the soul."

I think today I'll clean out what was Joe's room. I'll bag up all the stuff he left behind and run a hoover over the floor. In the words of another of my father's favourite mottos (he liked it so much he had it taped inside the door of that rather handsome tool cabinet he never used)- "No fun like work."

It's a strange feeling,I know.
And "A change is as good as rest" so they say.

It's a new beginning.

Life is all about new beginnings.

Hence the new icon? I like it - it seems very honest and direct.

I suppose so. I hadn't really made the connection- but, yes, everything fits.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

I hadn't thought of it that way.

But I do look like my father- and the resemblance is growing with age.

Since I haven't seen a picture of you, I assumed that that was a picture from some time ago of your father, as you refer to him in your post.

I think this is the first time I've seen you use an icon other than your usual.

No, this is an up to date photo of me- taken this very morning.

I reckoned it was time for a change.

Oh yes...the old empty nest syndrome. We will be facing that quite soon since one of ours is gone and the other will be one of these days. Two empty rooms...plenty of room for guests, more storage space...you have to look at the bright side. It really is a new beginning for us 50 something parents.

This is the second time we've been through it. All the kids moved away and then- quite unexpectedly- Joe moved back in.

We've just asked Carl to come and redecorate the vacated room....

Is the empty nest syndrome harder the second go 'round? Seems like it would be. Do you suppose your ghosts will make more frequent appearances now that he's gone? My wife's childhood home is supposedly haunted by an elderly female ghost, but I've never seen her. My wife thinks my presence is too jarring for it, so it lays low until I leave. (I'm thinking of this because you mentioned hearing Joe's loud music more than a few times.)

I like the new icon.

I love the idea of a ghost hiding from "jarring" human visitors.

Our ghost seems to have a preference for women. The only male who has ever seen anything here is Carl- the decorator- and I rather suspect that the ghost he saw was one he'd brought with him.

I'm glad you like the icon. I was getting sick of the old one.
