Annoying

Also on TV last night we had the second half of the 100 most annoying songs....you love to hate

We watched it all the way through- fools!

It must be youngsters doing the voting. OK, Millennium Prayer is annoying but not nearly as annoying as the bouncy Euro-pop of Congratulations. Oh lucky young people, never to have been exposed to early Cliff!

(Though I'll admit to having a soft spot for Summer Holiday.)

The most annoying song of all time is the Titanic Song.

Boy, but that was a controversial decision!  Americans love Celine Dion. Brits think she's weird.

But not in a fun way.

You know what? I predicted it.

Celine Dion is *not* universally loved here in the States. *g* And that song *is* hugely annoying, but I once heard an arrangement of it just for piano done by a woman in her twenties; she was studying with the same teacher as my daughter and played it at the annual recital, and it was really lovely. Go figure.

The song itself doesn't annoy me- and in the context of the film I think it's fine. As with most of these earworms the problem is over-exposure. We've just heard it too many times.

Celine is a strange person. If I could sum up what I think is wrong with her in a single phrase it's that she seems to take herself way too seriously.

Celine Dion creeps me out. In the microbiology of saccharine lyrics and canned melody she's the Ebola virus.

She's very peculiar. I was watching this clip of her in concert last night and two images came to me- one was a stick insect or praying mantis and the other was a reanimated corpse.

whoa now, which Americans are you talking about?

I hated Celine Dion until I heard her singing in French. I'm still not a big fan, but she's much better in French. Perhaps because American songwriters like that insipid Diane Warren aren't writing her lyrics, and Celine actually knows what she's singing about.

I saw a documentary about her once and came away from it feeling sorry for her. It seemed like she'd been caught up in something she couldn't control.

I am another American who does not love Celine Dion. I hope she holds her next concert in the middle of a freeway at rush hour.
One of my classmates sang "My Heart Will Go On" at our high-school graduation ceremony, and this has only cemented my hatred for that cyborg Canadian and her works.
I am probably not alone, since Celine no longer rules the stateside pop charts. American Idol graduates do, so the situation isn't much better, but still...

Maybe I was a little hasty in saying Americans love Celine. But that's how the experts divided on the show; the Yanks were for her and the Brits against.

Here in Britain we seem to have moved out of the Simon Cowell phase and the charts are once again full of real bands. I hope I've not spoken too soon....
