I nearly used the phrase "long winter days". Technically wrong, emotionally right. The greyness and the wetness just go on and on and on- and  there aren't any Christmas baubles hanging around  to make up for the lack of colour.

February is sacred to Juno Februa- Goddess of fevers and sexual desire. I find this a cheering thought.

Ailz went for a fasting blood test this morning. And- it being in the air- she got talking to the nurse about Harry Potter. The nurse said she and her kids can't be doing with Rowling. They find her "too fanciful".  Erm, right....

Nowhere did it say in any of the literature we read when we got them that what rabbits really like to eat is telephone directories.

February here in southern Spain is the month of growth and promise. I think it must be somewhat similar in England. We always take a quick trip to London in February and the daffodils are almost always in bloom in the parks and Kew is just beginning to wake up with the crocus carpets. You´re further north but February is always transition month in my mind.

Your bunnies eat phone directories?

That's a good way of viewing february. And, yes, these past few years the Spring flowers seem to have been coming through earlier and earlier.

On the news today we were told that this January has been the warmest since 1916.

Yup, the bunnies eat telephone directories. And, indeed, anything else that's made of paper, cardboard or wood. We've given them the directories in the hope that they'll leave other- more valuable- items alone.

Nothing to do with bunnies or Potter....but can you recommend a good classic Russian novel to make a start with. I'm attracted to Tolstoy but he might be too long? Was also hearing about The Seagull - Chechov (I hope)but I'm not keen on reading plays...??? Any ideas? I feel lacking by not having seen many Russian plays or having read any novels.
Hope you are both well
Jenny

It's a long time since I was into Russian novelists- and the things I liked as a teen I might not like now- but here are a couple of suggestions- both short.

Turgenev- Torrents of Spring
Dostoevsky- The Gambler

Or you might like to have a go at Chekhov's short stories. He's the best.
