1. Yesterday's tutorial was fun. Mainly we sat around and looked at reproductions of landscape paintings and tried to classify them according to the 18th century categories of "the beautiful"," the sublime" and "the picturesque".

2.  I see Peter O'Toole is likely to be nominated for an Oscar. I hope he wins. I spotted him on a train once about ten years ago.  He was sitting in a corner drinking Coca Cola and hiding behind the Times. He looked frail even then. I pretended I hadn't seen  him.

3. It's my birthday. They said it might snow, but it hasn't yet. I'm 56.

4. Here's a painting by Joseph Wright of Derby. It isn't "beautiful" because the forms are too rugged. And it's too far removed from the norms of 18th century landscape painting to be called "picturesque". So I guess we'll have to settle for "sublime".

What? Forms can´t be rugged and still be beautiful? I think it´s quite beautiful actually. There is depth and light and a flowing of said rugged forms...well, maybe beautifully sublime? Sublimely beautiful?
:)

According to Wikipedia, O´Toole has been nominated for an Oscar 7 times, the last in 1982! I haven´t seen "Venus" (yet) but on principle, I do hope he finally gets more than an honorary Oscar.

Well, this is an 18th century definition. According to Burke, the term "beautiful" should only be applied to things that are small, delicate and smooth.

Did you see O'Toole in the TV Casanova?- playing alongside David Tennant as his younger self. He was terrific

OK...I didn´t realize it was the definition back then although I should, given all the art appreciation I´ve taken. Shame on me.
:)
No, I haven´t seen the TV Casanova. I´m going to see if I can find it on dvd since I´ve heard quite a few good comments about it. It hasn´t been on Spanish TV as far as I know. They´re usually several years late getting the best stuff. I´m going to be in London next month and it´s now on my "to get in London" list. Barring that, I see that amazon uk has it at a decent price.

I own it on DVD. It's the show that alerted me to the remarkable talents of David Tennant.

Re picture: When did the term "Gothic" come into being? Possibly not until the 19th Century. But I think the Wright painting fits nicely with the Gothic literature of the late 18th Century.

Yes, there's certainly a gothic side to Wright. This painting is dated 1774- a decade after the publication of the first gothic novel.

Happy birthday! That painting is gorgeous. What's it called, and what's it of? I was in a subterranean river a couple of months ago - the painting is much more sublime, I think. Also sunshiney!! May you have a sublime and sunshiney year. :)

It's called "Cave at Evening". I've a suspicion it was painted in Italy, but I'm not sure.

Yes, the sublime is all about mountain crags and haunted castles

ah. last semester, they told us it was about waterfalls and infinite number sequences. but i believe that's the "american" sublime.

Belated happy birthday!

The 18th Century had weird notions of asthetics. Go the romantics!

Date: 2007-01-21 10:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com
Thanks.

But if the 18th century hadn't made the rules the romantics wouldn't have had anything to break.
