 I'd never shown my watercolours before.

One of my friends called them "terrifying"

Another said, "I see the inside of your head is even stranger than I thought."

No-one else said anything.

I would say visceral or primal rather than terrifying. They remind me of cave art. I think "In Hiding" is my favorite. I would love to see more if you feel like sharing them.

A lot depends on how widely your audience has studied art. I'm not an art scholar per se, but I'm into anthropology and archaeology, history, marginal groups, trains as rolling public art galleries -- I've seen a huge variety of art. Yours reminds me of many different things, but it doesn't closely match what is currently popular. Frida Kahlo is a great example of another visceral artist.
