Politics is an addiction I have.

I get my newspaper in the morning and the first thing I do is trufflehunt any scrap of political gossip. What a Blair acolyte said (in code) about Brown. What a Brown acolyte said (in code)  about Blair.

Why? Surely I'd be happier not knowing what these poor excuses for human beings are getting up to. It's always disgusting. It's always low. Its always devoid of thought.

I read in order to increase my contempt for them. This can't be healthy.

What if I went cold turkey?

I wonder....

I'm going to give it a whirl and try avoiding the political gossip. Let's see how long I last.

Politics is to some people what auto wrecks are to others. Can't look away.

"Oooh, it can't be as bad as it looks, right? OH GOD, look - it IS!"

For my part, I'm weary of the whole scene. Just hanging on 'til November when I'm hoping US voters oust enough Republicans so that the catfight can start between Congress and the White House.

I'm so sick of it.

I shall read the arts page and the sports page and ignore the rest.

I suspect this is a symptom...

Of the fact that you have otherwise constructed your own life to be blissfully boring?

Could be.

But surely I can get my kicks some other way...

I somehow don't see that happening. "Trufflehunt" is such a wonderful word choice!

Nosing around for this stuff makes me feel swinish.

At least you are disgusted by those two men. A great many of us can't even manage that.

My attitude is hardening against the throng who went out and voted for Blair in 2005. This was after Fallujah. After Abu Ghraib. After Dr Kelly and the tissue of lies he died trying to expose.

Yes, I'm angry with Blair, and angry with Brown for representing him. But I am far angrier with the electorate. We had a chance to punish him. We had a chance to stop it. We had a chance to say to the politicians of this country, "You will not lie to us and betray us. You will not commit mass murder and bring disgrace upon our nation." But no. What did we do. We filed into the ballot box like so many sheep and committed the most repugnant act of racism our nation has ever committed.

Anyway, my conclusion -- if you are astonished and appalled by the criminals running our country, good on you. It shows you have a conscience and a backbone. Qualities sorely lacking in this small island at the moment.

Apologies for the erratic grammar. Please consider the appropriate edits duly made!

A lot of people just stayed away from the ballot boxes in '05.

I didn't. I voted Lib Dem- but with the sense that my gesture of protest was pretty goddam feeble.
