Against The Clock
Jul. 9th, 2024 07:21 am I dreamed I'd been reading the lesson in church. It was a passage from the prophecy of Jeremiah. I thought I'd done rather a good job but my friend said I'd got off to a good start then slurred the second half and all that had come across was a message of doom. Oh dear, I thought.
But at least I'd get a chance to redeem myself when I read the same passage at Evensong- only first I needed to cross the city of Brighton from end to end.
I was sitting talking to an elderly male tourist when the bus we were on started up and I realised it wasn't going my way. I got it to stop. Now I had to make the journey on foot and only had twenty minutes to do it in.
The city of Brighton was hilly (as it is in reality) and constructed almost entirely of churches, most of them redundant and roofless, with faded murals and miraculous stonework on every wall, but I couldn't pause to admire it. Also there were little public parks which were all of them disused graveyards. Eventually I got myself down to sea level- only I wasn't any nearer to my destination and the entire curve of the bay lay ahead of me, several miles in length. "Who will read the lesson for me," I wondered "And will my family be worried. I really should have brought my phone...."
