Viva La Dirt League
Jun. 14th, 2024 08:49 am I have to keep reminding myself of the name of the troupe. It's called Viva La Dirt League- an unmemorable name, I think- at least it doesn't stick in my mind. Perhaps now I've written it down it will. One can but hope....
I don't know remember I tumbled to them. I guess YouTube tossed me a clip and I clicked on it in a desultory fashion and got hooked. They're a New Zealand Troupe- and they have fun making fun of video games. The founding members are Rowan Bettjeman, Alan Morrison and Adam King. Bettjeman is the Groucho, the Sellers, the Cleese- the effortlessly funny one in a cast of equals. Is he related to Sir John the poet? One would like to think so but his extra "t" says, "probably not".
All their stuff is on YouTube. They started small over ten years ago and now they're so well loved and well supported they've been able to build themselves a studio in Aukland with a green screen that's claimed to be the biggest in New Zealand. Chew on that, Peter Jackson! They've moved from dinky little sketches with minimal props to the half-hour movie "Baelian's Route" which is shot in widescreen in gorgeous Lord of the Rings type scenery (North Island I guess) and is hardly a comedy at all but more of a sweet, heart-warming fairytale or parable. There's talk of a feature film and why not?
I was never a gamer but you don't have to have played to know how these things work and how annoying and silly and addictive they can be. And anyway we're all gamers when it comes to the game of life- which video games model in simplified form. Viva La Dirt League love their gaming and- like are emotionally invested in the things they're sending up. The greatest, most lasting humour comes out of self-awareness....
