iI's a shortening of hobby-horse- a hobby-horse being a stick with a horse's head that children pretend to ride.
It carries the implication that the things we do for love not money are unserious, childish- peripheral to the proper business of living.
Whereas for most of us the things we do for love not money are more expressive of who we really are than the things we do for money not love.
Yesterday someone asked me about my hobbies and I was stymied. I do lots of things that are not for money but I don't think of them as hobbies.
This happened in the Meeting House. We were having coffe after worship. My friends wer standing around in groups chatting about all sorts. After a pause to gather my wits I made a sweeping gesture and said, "This is my hobby. Only it isn't because it's Life..."
