Watching The Builders
Oct. 25th, 2023 06:24 pm Next door's orangery now has walls and roof beams I keep going to the window- or out into the garden if the weather's being kind- to check on progress. Just in case you haven't come across it before I shall here insert Jerome JK Jerome's best-loved one-liner- "I love work... I can sit and look at it for hours."
It was a big deal the day before yesterday when they put the big metal girder in position that goes lengthways across the front of the building. Louis operated the lifting machine and Damian and the other guy stood at either end of the beam to make sure it landed and bedded down just so. Irt's beautiful to watch anything being done well- with craft, with care, with mastery....
They'll be wanting to get the roof on soon so they can carry on without bothering about the weather.
Nearly November.
Rain and shine, rain and shine- that's been the pattern since the storm system blew in which caused flooding up north. It seems to have been going on for weeks but I expect it's only days. I've noticed this about our relationship with weather, that we have short memories. Let it rain for a couple of days and people will say, "What a rotten summer", quite forgetting that they've just had a month of unbroken sunshine. I don't mind the rain. I have been planting grass seed and want it to grow...
Were I able to travel in time I'd make it a priority to go back to whenever it was they built the pyramids. I'd like to see how they did it. The earlier pyramids, I mean, the ones that are still in good shape, not the later ramshackle ones. I think they had technologies we have lost- most probably involving the use of sound...
