Magna Est...
Sep. 23rd, 2023 01:29 pm Most of the living issues of the 2020s swirl around in the Russell Brand affair. This makes it hard to ignore.
Many great champions and defenders of liberty have been libertines. Liberty and libertinage sort of go together. I could make a long, long list.
Victor Hugo was a sex maniac. He also wrote Les Miserables.
If we cancelled everybody who'd held shitty opinions and/or done shitty things we'd have no culture left.
St Paul has a great line about truth being contained in "frail earthen vessels."
I am against censorship. It's a tool of the fearful, of those who know their status rests on shaky foundations.
Did Wilde say, "There's no such thing as a bad book, only a badly written one"? If he didn't he should have done.
I can't think of a single thing in any media that I'd want to censor. If something is distasteful to me I give it a wide berth.
(Of course publishers have every right not to publish work they disapprove of. This is a precious freedom too.)
Knock an idea on the head and if it has energy it will pop up again elsewhere. Difficult, dangerous and disgusting ideas need to be worked through. They can't be dodged.
