poliphilo I dreamed that he and I were medieval barons arguing over which of two kings should have control of the string of castles in Provence that were critical to France's defence against a foreign invader. "Are you saying your king is a better manager of men and resources than mine?" I asked. And he replied "I couldn't have put it more succinctly myself."
His King was Henry II and mine was John. The invaders were Mongols and one of the castles was the city-sized fortress of Roquebrune. What a farrago!
Roquebrune sounded like it ought to be a real place so this morning I looked it up. There are two contenders- both in Provence, but only Roquebrune Cap Martin has a castle.
The chateau de Roquebrune dates from the late 10th century- and its keep is said to be the oldest in France. For much of its history it belonged to the Grimaldis and was within the territory of the Principality of Monaco. I have no idea how or why it got itself into my dreams...
