Humbled

 I was speaking to a woman who has cut all "moving images" out of her life. No films, no TV, no Internet. We spend too much time, she said, watching other people living their lives when we should be living our own. 

I couldn't argue. I couldn't compete. I made a humble face as I confessed my addiction to YouTube...

Speaking as a person who *does* have wealth and free time, my guess would be that she does as well. People have been wanting to be entertained and informed as long as there have been people. So now for her it's all live concerts and theatrical performances? I saved a hundred dollars by watching a short youtube repair video, but maybe she would enjoy the interaction with a repair person. I know what she means, but the daily practicality of it doesn't seem well thought out. Presumably a chatty in-person knitting/book group is what she is hoping for rather than a zoom meeting but she (and her distant friends) will be missing out. My parents-in-law live more than a thousand miles away and are too frail to travel. I see them at most a couple of times a year in person, but see them every week on the family zoom meeting. Maybe the sound of voices on the telephone or recorded music is good enough for many people who don't care about seeing facial expressions or watching dancing.

I believe she is quite well off. That's how she presents, anyway. As for what she does with her time I have no idea. I doubt that she goes to the theatre; I think that would come under the heading "watching other people living their lives ".

I do seem to be quite good at getting through books and television shows while my musical instruments lie neglected.
