We are at the Meeting House- not being Quakers but sitting in on a meeting of the local chapter of the Friends of the Earth.

Earlier there had been food. All vegan. Nice.

Now we're having a slide show. Highlighting all the good things Friends of the Earth have done over the past ten years.

They'd stopped the Council selling off a tract of farmland at the back of Beachy Head that had been gifted to the town in perpetuity. Brilliant.

They'd got the Council planting wildflowers for the sake of the bees. I'm all for that.

They'd helped push through the wind farm at Polegate. Not so sure about this one. I like turbines (yes, I really do, I think they're elegant) but I also think they're yesterdays tech.

And then we move into small groups and talk about what we'd like to see happen next. Solar panels ("They don't work for the working class" says Ailz) and how about shutting down the annual airshow ("A bit killjoy", I'm discreet enough not to say.)

And all through the whole of it I'm asking the clock, "How long before school gets out?"

Why does Aliz think solar panels don't work for the working class?

She's referring to panels on houses. You need to be a home owner to start with, they are expensive ànd only work if your roof points the right way and you aren't in the shade of a tall building or live in a valley.

Yeah, [personal profile] heleninwales helped explain it, too.

Solar panels are not quite so expensive here (plus they come with tons of tax credits) and I believe private home ownership is higher here as well.
