poliphilo We walked to the shops down the footpath that used to be a railway line. This is a post-industrial landscape. The old gas-works on one side, an area that is now allotments on the other. At this time of year there is Queen Anne's lace in copious amounts and above all there's hawthorn....
Every year I wait for the hawthorn. Sometimes, in my impatience, I'll think I've seen it's first flowering when what I'm actually seeing is the last flowering of the blackthorn. Blackthorn is very beautiful, but there's no mistaking the veritable hawthorn when it finally comes- with its heavy, musky scent and it's torrents of white blossom...
