Life Without A Car
Mar. 24th, 2023 08:18 am We went to the Meeting House by a route we'd often driven but never walked before- and noticed all sorts of new things. We've been talking about how bad the roads are and now we're noticing how the pavements are worse- which was even more of an issue when we returned home in the rain and were continually having to pick our way between puddles of a depth you might expect on a rural path but not on an urban street...
By happy synchronicity I was watching a clip of film from 1910 last night. It was shot somewhere in London I think- and featured "Tomboy Tilly"- and her pal- two impish teens who go round wilfully terrorising adults by stealing laundry vans and pushing bakers into their troughs of dough- and I couldn't help noticing how clean and well maintained all the paved ways were...
So that was our first taste of a life without a car. It was a good experience. We had waterproofs with us so the rain wasn't too much of a bother. One of the things we hadn't noticed before was a little independent bakery in the town centre- where we bought a couple of "Apple cruffins"- half muffin, half croissant- filled with stewed apple- and had them for our second breakfast. If we'd been driving we'd have sailed past as we must have done many times in the past- and not been tempted by the window display...
