Out One: Noli Me Tangere

poliphiloI never thought I'd get to watch Out One: Noli Me Tangere- because it used to be one of the rarest of movies that are not actually lost- but in the digital era nothing need be rare any longer- and here I am three episodes in- with only five more to go.
We spend the longest time watching two troupes of actors workshopping two separate plays by Aeschylus. Improvise, said Rivette. Improvise what? said the actors. Just improvise that you're doing an improvisation, said Rivette. Since Rivette had assembled a cast made up of the brightest young actors in France watching them get on with this task is no hardship- even when they're doing it for half an hour at a time.
Is there a story? Sort of... but since it involves Les Treize- a nefarious secret society that Balzac invented as a young writer and then lost interest in and did nothing with after he'd grown up I very much doubt that it's going anywhere.
Seven Against Thebes will never make it into production, Prometheus Chained will never make it into production, The Treize- if they even exist- will never be exposed, but who needs resolution when the process is so interesting?...
