It's interestingly literal - most memorials I have come across are rather more abstractly cenotaph-like. Is it related to the building?

It represents a soldier standing on the parapet of a trench, with others below him. I like its realism and restraint.

The building it faces is the old town hall (shortly to become a shopping mall).

That's terrific: the lighting, and the framing, it's all very evocative!

Thanks. I've been photographing the memorial for years- and this is the first time I've been satisfied with the result.
