poliphilo We are in the process of turning my mother's former bedroom back into the living room it was always meant to be- and needed something decorative to put on a flat surface in an alcove. "Let's go to The Range." we said- and when the Range didn't have anything that quite fitted the bill, "Lets go to Hilliers"; then, having found what we wanted at Hilliers, "Lets go to the pub." The last time we had this degree of freedom to come and go as we please was eight or nine years ago...
My sister reports that the nursing home reports that my mother has been talking about someone called Freddy. So far as I know my mother has never had anyone called Freddy in her life, so either the story has got altered in transmission (as in a game of Chinese Whispers) or my mother has been keeping secrets.
Might Freddy have been one of the many animals that passed in and out of her childhood? Possibly. But, then again, how little I know about her- which, I suppose is always the case- on both sides- with parents and children- and very much how it needs to be.
