Fledgin'

Whole lotta fledgin' goin' on.

The first chimney pot on the road that sits at right angles to ours is where our all-but-tame gull has its nest. The fluffy, speckeldy chick it's been raising has somehow gotten itself out of the nest and is now living on the garage roof below. It can't fly, nort do anything much for itself except make seagull noises at a pitch just within the limits of human hearing. We've been anxious and wondering if we should intervene, but its parents seem to be sticking by it, mounting guard, presumably bringing food- and we trust it's going to make it...

Next chimney pot along is home to a family of seven jackdaws. When the kids first fledged there was a terrific amount of coming and going- brief, circular flights that never took the flier out of sight of home- and on one memorable occasion a fight, with the two combatants rolling down the pitched roof, locked together, scratting and squwaking until they entered empty air and broke apart...

The young jackdaws are in full argue mode here too and it's always amusing to watch- almost as funny as the young magpies.

We have magpies- but no nests or youngsters that I've spotted.
