A Responsibility Discharged
May. 6th, 2022 08:32 amA distant relative stopped by the day before yesterday and picked up the portrait of my distant ancestor Samuel Allen- the Quaker abolitionist- and will be dropping it off with a third distant relative who is working on the history of the Allen family (my mother's people). I am happy to have relinquished custodianship of a object which, while lacking any kind of artistic merit, possesses a certain degree of historical interest. It was a responsibility- a minor one- but a responsibility all the same- and I have now discharged it. The relative who is the family historian thinks he may be able to place the painting in the library or museum of the small town where Samuel lived.
