Back on the farm we got shouted at my pheasants; here it's gulls. "Can you change the record please" says Ailz in response to a burst of squawking.
I like to hear them. I liked to hear them when they came inland and squawked at us at the farm. It reminded me that the sea was only 25 miles away.
And now the sea is only half a mile away. If I put some clothes on and marched out the door I could be on the beach in ten minutes.
Was I a sailor once- or a fisherman? Must have been- because I love to look at the sea and boats and hear the gulls, but, oddly enough I'm not fond of actually being on the water- or in it either. Perhaps I drowned once too often.
One of the things we've inherited from the previous owners is a garden statue of a fisherboy cradling a boot. It's the oddest thing. He wears a noose round his neck because they had him tied to the fence in case he blew over in the strong winds they have hereabouts. I have restored him to a place of honour. I shall call him Tom.
