St Margaret's Bay, to the east of Dover, is the point at which the British mainland comes closest to France. The distance- as the crow flies, is just 18 miles.

A Spitfire banked overhead (I reckon it's the same plane that flies over the farm and that it has a regular gig taking paying customers on a tour of the White Cliffs) a little boat chugged about in the middle distance (Ailz reckoned it was police or customs) and the P & O ferries slid in and out of the port of Dover.
