No cups of tea this morning. The mains have been shut off. "At least it's not the Internet," says Ailz. The water board acknowledges it's their doing but doesn't give a reason. Instead of tea I drink bottled water.

But even as I write that first paragraph the tap we've left open in the kitchen starts to trickle. I fill a kettle. Tea at last.

"That's the toilet filling," says Ailz, "Either that or a dog barking." I stop typing and listen. "Why would a dog be barking quietly in our bathroom?" I ask.

I watched 1917 last night. Many of the up to date movies I've been viewing recently are less vivid versions of ones made 50-60 years ago. Slow West feels pretty good until you compare it with The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and Tinker, Tailor Soldier, Spy feels pretty good until you compare it with the Ipcress File, but 1917 is a movie which could only have been made now, not only because of the digital technology that allows the action to flow seamlessly but also because it's structured like a video game and that's a very new way of telling stories.
