Move inland from the white cliffs and the first village you come to is East Dean- which is pretty. Houses round here start at around £1000,000 +

If you turn to the left from where that last picture was taken you'll see this house. It has a blue plaque on it.

And this is what the blue plaque says...

Is this the house Conan Doyle had in mind when he described Holmes's retirement cottage in The Adventure of the Lion's Mane? Erm… Probably not. To begin with Holmes's house is described as "lonely" and this is on the village green with houses all it around and the village pub just a saunter away. On the other hand, Holmes, who narrates this story himself, may have been indulging in a little pardonable misdirection...
