Dancing Inside

My mother is sitting in front of the TV watching the PM's daily interface with the media. One of his questioners just used the phrase "frankly terrifying" and I felt an urge- which I resisted- to get up and do a little dance. No-one was watching so the effort would have been wasted- and, besides, I was already dancing in my head. The worst thing we can do at present- worse even than hoarding toilet rolls- is stoke the fear.

And now another questioner is asking him to bring in a curfew.

Today was Mothering Sunday. It was cancelled. Church services have been cancelled too- and the clergy are putting their preachments on line. One of them was using candles as a visual aid and managed to set his jumper on fire. It earned him lots of hits.

What makes me afraid is the motor caravan brigade being here in force today rushing like lemmings to park up and climb the Wrekin which means that some people simply don't get it at all at any level.

When I was in college, my chemistry professor was teaching us about phosphorous. He had a large chunk of the stuff on his work area. I don't know what he was trying to do, but he managed to drop it in the damp sink. Immediately tiny fireworks exploded outward in every direction, setting his lab coat and his beard aflame.

He was very calm as he took off his flaming lab coat, smothered the smoldering beard fire, and said, "I think that will be all for today. Would one of you pull the fire alarm on your way out?"

This might be my favorite college memory of all time. I wish I could remember that professor's name.
