Not Yet In Lockdown

poliphiloWe were in Lewes yesterday. The town seemed as busy as usual. We joined a short queue at the baker's shop.
The pub we had lunch in (see last post) was almost empty. There was a regular at the bar- an old guy with a walking frame who looks like the painter Augustus John (right down to the beret): I suspect he'll be lost if the place has to close.
(A lot of old folk more or less live in pubs. Close the pubs, make the oldsters isolate themselves: that in itself is going to cause deaths.)
The farm shop where we buy our vegetables was busy- and serving meals.
We had reason to drop by the village hall this morning and there was a yoga class in full swing.

Date: 2020-03-18 03:45 pm (UTC)Augustus was over-rated in his lifetime, under-rated now. His best portraits have terrific panache. He produced what I think of as the definitive portraits of W.B. Yeats and T.E. Lawrence.
