I go for a walk through the fields. The cat comes with me but falls behind. I hear him calling, "Where are you? Where are you?" but I don't respond because he'll never make it through the tall wet grasses to where I'm standing so what's the point? Every time I attempt it the walk gets harder. There's a sort of a path where I've walked before but its very faint and following it won't stop my trousers from getting soaked to mid-thigh. As I go, I pull up ragwort because horses. The pond is partially overgrown, and the part that is still clear of grass is silting up. The dam which was bare earth at the beginning of the year is now so buried in growth you'd never know it was artificial- which is entirely what I intended.

Robins aren't supposed to be able to eat from hanging feeders but we've got one who can. We're seeing a couple of jays- a pair or possibly parent and child- and whenever they show up I want to reach for my camera but restrain myself because they're smart and nervy and pick up on any movement. Squirrels, of which there are any number, have taken to coming into the house- where they eat the nuts I spilled by the front door.

There's a black and white cat that comes visiting. It stalks the squirrels and comes in the house to eat Marlowe's breakfast. It's wary of...

Whoops, it's just encountered Marlowe- and there's been yowling and scratting and a Mexican stand-off. I went and sang "Let it Be" to them to calm their nerves-and when that didn't work I reached for the nearest watering can and the intruder read my intentions and took herself off.
