Cheddar Man

Scientists at the Natural History Museum have sequenced the genome of Cheddar Man- a 10,000 year old skeleton from the Cheddar Gorge in Somerset- and have discovered he had markers for dark skin, blue eyes and curly hair. He belonged to the group of modern humans who repopulated the British Isles after the last great Ice Age- and around 10% of modern, indigenous Britons can count him among their ancestors. The facial reconstruction- by Alfons and Adrie Kennis- has him looking like the late James Brown- only considerably more relaxed.

The Kennis brothers do fabulous work- creating portraits of early humans that suggest they all had a wonderful sense of humour. I'm not sure they think of themselves as artists- but we should certainly be feteing them as such.

Yesterday we had the back view. This is from the front....

Ailz suggested it was time I had a new icon- so she took some pictures.

This isn't how I see myself- but it probably will be.
