We have three mature oak trees in the upper field, close to the house- and others at a distance. One of them is so close that if it decided to fall over its upper branches would hit us. They have held their leaves longer than most of our deciduous trees but now they're letting go. If there's a gust it's as it someone chucked out a fistful. They don't exactly flutter- they're too stiff for that. They spin, they jerk, they strike attitudes. The grass is full of them. Whenever I enter the house I bring oakleaves in on my shoes.

We have a small spiky similar leaf on our floor by the door; I haven't wanted to get rid of it because it so clearly wanted to come in.
