Something I learned from Jiddhu Krishnamurti (in fact I learned a lot from him) is disrespect for scripture.

No revelation, prophecy or statement of the truth is forever- but is always conditioned by its time and place of utterance- and the slipperiness of language- and once spoken or written begins to decay.

He applied this doctrine to his own teaching. Don't bother with my old books, he said (in so many words) Just listen to what I'm saying now, in this moment- then let it go.

Which is why 'Quaker Faith and Practice' constantly updates- as the world and society changes, so does the text and the ideas it contains. What stays are the absolute truths- so many of those early Friends had it bang on, even the embarrassing ones (to some anyway, although not to me) like James Nayler and Ann Austin.

Yes, well, I've always thought the Quakers were pretty cool.

Jiddu Krishnamurti was a wise and honest man of great integrity. He was also dead right. Half of the miseries perpetrated on the world by Christianity would never have happened if more Christians were willing to admit that the Bible isn't exactly and perfectly correct forever and ever.

He helped me through one of the rockier periods of my life.

Glad to hear it! I haven't read a lot of his stuff --- not in my line --- but I hold him in great esteem because he had the honesty and guts to blow out of the whole Theosophical "messiah" game and do something much better with his life. Also, as far as I know, everyone I know who takes his work seriously is a good person, which kind of says it all, really.

I've heard so many hateful things preceded by "The bible is very clear on this..."

I got Biblical fundamentalism knocked out of me at theological college.
