Old And New

poliphiloWe drove up to Leicester on the MI and back down again on the A5- the Roman road which is still known in certain sections by its old name of Watling Street. The M1 was built to expedite the journey north but in its present state does nothing of the sort. We were in queues for much of the way- partly owing to roadworks that won't be finished till 2022- and arrived an hour late for a family party. The A5, by contrast, was lightly travelled and fast, took us through interesting places like Towcester (pronounced Toaster) and the western edge of Milton Keynes (I'm not being facetious- I think MK is fascinating) and got us home earlier than expected. There's a moral in there somewhere- something to do with the vanity of human wishes and the old ways being best- but I can't exactly put my finger on it...
