Dorothy used to ring us up Sunday lunchtime, almost as regular as clockwork.

For a split second earlier today, when I was in the toilet as it happens, I had the fleeting thought that something I was expecting to happen hadn't happened yet. And then I remembered.

My grandmother Gwen and her younger sister, my Aunt Martha, used to talk on the phone every morning at 9 AM. They'd done it for decades.
