Chickens

Sainsbury's have stopped selling the eggs from chickens who have a lot of space to run around in and substituted eggs from chickens who have rather less space to run around in. No problem: we'll buy our eggs from the milkman instead.

Chickens get treated with so much disrespect. A yob who swings a cat by its tail is in for a shaming by the tabloids and a visit from unsympathetic folks in uniform. An industry that brutalises billions of birds mostly passes under the radar.

Mmm, chicken McNuggets!

Puppies, kittens, baby chicks- I don't see the difference myself.

We dont eat eggs due to my allergy (and he's just not keen) but we do have a friend who homes rescue battery hens.

When you get to see them close to and interact with them, you realise what attractive personalities they have!

Ailz kept chickens once and would agree with what you say about them having personality.

I eat a lot of eggs. Eggs and cheese are what hold me back from becoming vegan.

I love eggs and cheese too.

My friend who used to work at McDonalds tells me Chicken McNuggets are made of 'leftover parts like beaks and assholes' so I've never taken a shine to them. And imagine the convenience of being able to have eggs (and milk!) delivered! When I was a child, we had that option, but no more.

Our milkman delivers all sorts of things- and we've taken the decision to make more use of him. This week, for instance, in addition to milk, we had him deliver orange juice, cream and potatoes. We feel we ought to be making it worth his while to stay in business.

This kind of subject used to come up in my Grange meetings all the time. Our older members who had grown up on famrs were adamant that animal cruelty laws should be applied to farm animals as well as pets. They insisted that there's no reason why a farmer has to maltreat livestock, whether chickens, pigs, cows, or anything else. They were also all opposed to feedlots, battery raising chickens, etc. I figure they had good reason to know what they were talking about.

Farmers here can get a visit from the RSPCA if things aren't right but as Tony says, battery hens seem to get given the go by and it's so wrong!
