I thought my cold had gone away when all it had done was vacate one section of the upper respiratory tract in order to annoy another. I had a few bouts of concentrated coughing over night, but slept in between.

Ailz's mother is in hospital following a fall and now seems to be in much the same mental state as my mother- only not cheerful about it. Ailz's brother has been doing the heavy lifting since we moved down here- and the situation has been a steady source of low-level drama. The drama has a long prehistory and I think I know some of the reasons for it but I'm sure I don't know them all. It is now, perhaps, playing out towards an end game. As much as possible, so far as this blog is concerned, I mean to keep it off stage- but circumstances will probably require me to mention it now and then.

"Is it really as long ago as August that John McCain died?" asks Ailz. She's scrolling through a list of "famous" people who died in 2018. I look over her shoulder and mostly see faces I don't recognise. Footballers, comedians, sports commentators....

It looks as though the last day of 2018 is going to be experienced in West Kent as chilly and overcast.

I'm sorry about the family drama. It sucks.

I hope you and Ailz have a happy, healthy 2019 in spite of it all!

True dat, although it can take a while. :-p

(You missed about three years of family drama on my journal, with my dad's decline into dementia, my brother's increasingly lurid misbehavior, my step-mother's decine into dementia. and my step-brother's sundry criminal activities. It all resolved over a period of 15 months during which they passed away one by one, Dad and Dorothy by natural causes and Roger and Bob by suicide. Which is not how I would have preferred it to go, but as an old friend from Scotland used to say, "Aye, well, hut can ye dae?" No much, really.)

My dad had a tendency to marry women who were from highly dramatic internecine-war-prone families, who had or would go on to have dramatic, dysfuntional relationships with their children, and who were aces at both handing on the drama to a new generation and fomenting hostility and anger between their kids. It was... well, you know the movie Lion in Winter? Like that, except that my poor dad was a peaceful man in the midst of the screaming rows; more Edward the Confessor than Henry II.

Sorry. hit "post" accidentally.

Anyway, I hope your drama resolves itself with minimal stress and noise.
