My sister looked at my pic of the exhibitionist in the last post and suggested that what I'm taking to be a beard could be a tongue- in which case the figure's sex becomes indeterminate. I could smack the bloody Victorian who took his bloody hammer to the genitals.

A stuck out tongue plus fish- that's really rude!

It was Cromwell's people who smashed up the stone figures. The greatest tragedy there is that stunning west door! One has to be thankful that the chapter house door (now the library door) survived untouched- it's one of the finest I've ever seen anywhere.

And don't get me going on George Gilbert bloody Scott!

You're assuming Cromwell's lot smashed the exhibitionist but I don't think they were interested in indecency. It's the religious images they abominated- the idols.

I accept they bashed up the west door- but I question whether they'd have bothered getting out a ladder to take a hammer to a non-religious image.

The chapter house door is magnificent.
