We planted great numbers of hawthorns last year. It wasn't our best idea. Most were uprooted almost immediately by horses and rabbits- who scattered the protective sleeves far and wide. A few however have survived and are now in leaf. We won't have the thick hedge we were planning on but- assuming the wildlife has finished its destructing- we will have the odd bush. Hawthorns are among my very favourite things.

I don't think I've ever known the fields be as waterlogged as they are this spring. More rain is forecast for today.

The rabbit shooters have returned. They arrive in the late afternoon, do their stuff in the gloaming, and retire as night sets in. I doubt they'll make much of a killing as rabbit numbers seem to be down. Their presence was betrayed the other evening by beams of red light snaking across the fields. I don't know what exactly they're using. I looked up infrared torches and according to the people who sell them the light they emit is invisible to human eyes and this was highly visible.
