The men who delivered the dishwasher were going on about how rural we are.

"And you own all this land?"

"Well...sort of. It's my mother's really." Which was Jesuitical of me.

 I'm not comfortable with being visibly rich. I had rich parents (so a safety net in place) but I've never lived rich.

"It's a lot bigger than my back garden in Croydon" said the man.

Yeah, but most of my adult life I didn't even have a back garden. I had a yard...

Opposite for me- I'm certainly not from a wealthy background so I sometimes feel uncomfortable about how comparatively wealthy we now are!

I've moved up and down the housing scale. A middle class childhood spent in a detached house with half an acre of garden then a professional life with accommodation that came with the job, then 30 years in a terrace house in a run-down quarter of Oldham- and now for the past five years a farmhouse in deepest Kent with five to six acres of land...
