According to my ex-brother-in-law the raised floor in the farm's main living area- which makes it such a bore to move round the house with a walking frame or wheelchair- isn't just an architectural quirk but something the previous owners had put in to create a cosy, low-ceilinged space in which they could play at being peasants.

Twits.

If I were as rich as the neighbour who wants to buy the place for peanuts I'd take the raised floor out, a procedure that would involve the use of jack hammers. Or- actually this is a better idea- I'd leave it as it is and move somewhere else.

Somewhere with high ceilings. Somewhere less like a shoebox...

High ceilings are a thing here and were in our previous place and that's why I love Victorian houses!

Yeah, but with high ceilings you have to lug stepstools around every time you want to dust the fan or change the light bulbs.
