The neighbour who was thinking of buying the farm sent his builder round to price up the jobs he'd need to do to bring it up to his standards. Ooh, I thought, this shows he's serious. Then he sent back word that the improvements/adaptions/remedial work would cost him a quarter of a million and so he couldn't possibly offer us the kind of money we were hoping for...

I felt like I'd just stood on a rake

Ailz did her own assessment of what it would cost to get the place decent and came up with £40,000. Tops. But then she wasn't factoring in an infinity pool and gold-plated taps...

We'll see what happens next. If he wants the place he's going to have to come up with what we consider an acceptable offer. If not he's out of the reckoning.

And if the developers don't come up with an offer we like we're not actually obliged to sell to anyone. We'd like to move, but we're not desperate.

It does sound like an invitation to reduce your price, rather than a genuine 'not interested'. Also, a quarter of a million sounds like an immense amount of money, but 250,000 sounds like the sort of sum property costs...
