I don't think Billy Graham was wrong exactly. If you want to change the world you have to start with yourself. That's what he was saying- only it came out as "you need to let Jesus into your heart"- and, of course, there was cultural baggage attached. He had a simple message for complicated times- but if he'd been as wise as a serpent as well as innocent as a dove he might have avoided sharing a platform with Richard Nixon. No-one ever questioned his fundamental decency. 

In his pomp he could have duked it out with the Pope and the Dalai Lama as to who was the world's most famous religious leader- and might well have won.  If he had died back then it would have been all over the media. As it was he slipped away so quietly that the British press barely noticed.  His obituary in the Guardian was written by a man who died in 2007- which is a measure of the extent to which he had outlived his era.

The Radio 4 news said something to the effect that when young he was expected to become a salesman, but... That's not 'but' it's 'and'...
