Microwave Cooking

 Can we live without a microwave? 

Well of course we can. I got through childhood without one and our ancestors got through their entire lives.

I read an article a month or two back which was saying that microwaves zap a lot of the goodness out of food. I forget the details but the broad assertion is all one needs to know. Ever since then I've used the microwave sparingly- mainly as a way of reheating my mother's cups of tea and coffee when she's let them get cold (not much goodness in them to begin with) and never as a mode of primary cooking.

And now we've got rid of it altogether (banished it to the garage- halfway to the tip)- and its old position (space is limited in our badly designed kitchen) is occupied by a food processor.

The first several years I was dating Debbie, her apartment did not have a microwave and she was fine with that. She uses the one in our present home rarely, much like you do. For me, it's my appliance of first choice. I'm all about convenience and speed in the kitchen. Debbie would rather do things more methodically, and she definitely believes the quality of food is better from the stove top or the traditional oven.

I think Debbie is right- as a matter of scientific fact.

I use ours to reheat and that's pretty much it.

We've rarely used ours for anything else.

We do an awful lot of our cooking using a toaster oven: grilling chicken, melting things that have melting requirements, small pies, etc. We do use our conventional oven once in a while for roasting. The microwave is strictly for quickly heating liquids. I wouldn't miss it.

This will be our first full day without the microwave. We're doing fine so far...
