Here lieth the body of John Wigzell, City-son and wax-chandler of London...

Simple mis-spelling or clever word-play? Whichever it is the locals clearly appreciated it because when the stone got broken they stuck it back together again and mounted it on the exterior east wall of the church.

This is still Kemsing, by the way.

What a fabulous gravestone! Very confusing bones behind the skull, but definitely eye-catching. Funny, I was talking about what a chandler was just yesterday with someone who didn't know.

There are a lot of very similar designs in the churchyard- presumably all the work of one stonemason or his workshop. I puzzled over the bones too and concluded that one of them wasn't a bone at all but a trumpet.
